XO Wins Portland Marathon team title
PORTLAND,
OR. —3 October 2004— Three
Team XO athletes had a busy and very successful weekend, as
they came to the Willamette Invite on Saturday to cheer on thirteen
of their teammates and on Sunday competed in their first marathon
and walked away with the team title.
Destry
Johnson, Patrick Dill and Lance Tompson all displayed very promising
marathon potential in their first ever marathons. Each athlete
was anxious to get the race underway, but stayed calm at the
start and followed the race plan perfectly. Johnson said, “Many
people stressed the importance of controlling ourselves at the
start of the marathon. We tried very hard to do just that and
ran together through 11 miles with ease.” Tompson also
commented on this by saying, “Having a pack of teammates
running with me really helped”.
As the
race progressed, all three gained confidence and started to
pick it up at mile 17. Johnson showed an impressive charge catching
six runners before finishing in 4th with a time of 2:30:49.
Dill and Tompson rounded out the XO trio finishing 10th (2:36.19)
and 11th (2:39.14). "Not bad for our first, I think we
all can run in the low 20’s," suggested Dill.
Team
XO’s 4th, 10th and 11th finish easy placed them in first
for the team completion rounding out a great weekend for XO.
Johnson commented after the race by saying, “It went better
than expected! We sure were happy with our times, and our team
performance… I might do another one of these things after
all!”
