Jeff Sather’s Elmira Invite a Success!
Salem, OR – XO Cross Country team member Jeff Sather has found his own niche in Eugene Track and Cross Country. He is the head distance coach at Elmira High School in the small town of Elmira located just west of Eugene, OR. Sather has coached the Elmira distance runners for the past two track seasons, but this is his first cross country season with the team. With just 450 students in the entire student body, Sather enjoys the intimacy of coaching a small team of just nine boys and seven girls. In stark contrast to the Elmira Cross Country Invites of the past which had as few as four total teams, this year’s event boasted 148 boys, 119 girls, with 14 teams on the boys side and 12 on the girls. Sather also included an Open race that featured predominantly the XO/Lane Distance Project teams as well as XO athletes and other open runners.
“The meet went very well and I am quite happy with the outcome. Both the high school races were unbelievable, two great duels between a few of the top preps in the state,” said Sather in a post-meet interview. “I received a lot of compliments, both from coaches and athletes, who like the course which is different from last year. It is faster and much more spectator friendly. It sounds like a lot of the teams will be back next year and I hope to grow both the high school races as well as the open race.”
The open race, starring Paul Kezes and Max King, went out fast, with most of the men barreling through the first mile in under five minutes. Kezes, who wanted to go “a little under 15 minutes”, entered the finish chute first in 14:30 with Max King, fresh off a triathlon in which mechanical bike failures caused him to run half the bike leg, finished not far behind in 14:44. A tactical Kevin Ullman moved up steadily through the field and crossed the finish line in a PR, 16:17. “It felt like a tempo, it felt good!” said 800 meter specialist Ullman. In another rare cross country showing, Ross Krempley finished the course in 16:42 after pacing several of his Lane athletes through the race.
It was great for the kids to have XO out there. They associate Team XO with the XO Invite put on in the spring and they think the whole XO thing is really cool,” commented Sather.
With the emergence of the Elmira Invite, XO team members like Jeff Sather continue to strongly support the running community they live in, adding to the rapidly rising stock of Tracktown, USA. “As long as I have kids out there who are motivated and who want it, I’ll continue to coach and put on meets,” says Sather.
