XO Contingent Heads to the State Championships
The USATF Oregon State
Cross Country Championships were held at the third race of the
Fit Right/Puma Oregon Cross Country Series in northwest Portland.
The race combined age group and genders to create an environment
that was equally as exciting at the back of the race as it was
at the front.
The men's race quickly
became strung out with a pack of a half dozen runners at the front
including both Forsha and Stout, as well as three time Olympic
Trials Marathon qualifier John Dimoff.
Dimoff led the race
early, but soon Stout took over leading duties. Eventually, though,
it was Greg Mitchell of Team Red Lizard who gapped the field to
take the individual prize. Forsha and Stout ran strong late in
the race to finish third and fourth respectively.
"It was a pretty
good race," says Forsha. "I just stuck with the pack
and we ended up placing pretty well." The men of XO finished
third of nine open men's teams behind two Portland based teams,
the Bowerman Athletic Club and Team Red Lizard.
Stout, who has been
gearing his season toward the National Championships was pleased
but eager to get into a bigger race. "I can't wait until
Nationals , man, that's going to be fun!"
Ullman and Krempley
also look forward to the future, but have indoor track more in
mind. "It's fun to get out here and be with the team, I wouldn't
miss it for anything," says Ullman of the race. "But
Ross and I both know it'd be a different story if the race were
about three miles shorter!" The duo are already looking to
meets starting in January at the University of Washington's indoor
track facility.
The women who couldn't
make the trip were represented well by Tara Crowley of Portland
who raced her way to the individual title, her second straight
victory in this Puma Series. "I just had a lot of fun, running
with the boys and all, I even got to run with Ross for a minute
or two!" Crowley finished the four mile course in 25:00 and
placed 33rd among the 70 men who finished the race.
Among the final runners
crossing the finish line was 71 year-old sensation Suzi Macleod
who averaged well under ten minutes per mile on the hilly course,
leaving us all something to aspire to. Congratulations to Suzi.
Both men's and women's
teams will be at full force for next weekend's Regional Championships
at Pier Park in Portland.

and Lane Community College head coach, Ross Krempley, spent the
first part of his weekend finishing his first collegiate coaching
season at the NWAACC Junior College National Championships. The
men's and women's teams both turned in impressive performances
finishing
fourth and fifth respectively. Three runners earned All-American
honors. Congratulations and best wishes to Ross in his future
coaching career.
