Day One
:: USATF Cross Country Championships
Team XO Gets Near Upset to Nike Farm Team!
Vancouver
, WA. —12 Febuary 2005—
A fierce chill that rolled onto the course just minutes before
the starting gun went off added to a course made muddy by three
previous races on the rolling hills of Fort Vancouver’s
National Historic Site was not enough to dissuade a talented group
from Team XO this Saturday on the first day of the National Championships
in the men’s 4-kilometer race (the “Short Course”).
“I tallied it
up before the race, looking into different scenarios, and I knew
it would be close between [Team XO] and The Farm Team,”
relates XO team director Ross Krempley shortly after the race.
“I just wish we could come away with one!”
Krempley speaks, of
course, of the one point differential that decided the outcome
of the team scoring’s of the first of the weekend’s
two races. The 4k short course championship race was stocked with
talent in this year’s edition. Many eyes were trained on
the front of the race and the talented lead pack that saw Tim
Broe, Adam Goucher, Donald Sage, Joshua McDougal, Jorge Torres,
and Alan Webb take the top six spots respectively to reserve their
places on Team USA if they choose to participate at the World
Cross Country Championships in Saint Galmier, France. However,
the team race was of equal or greater excitement, as XO appeared
to have the upper hand as the runners finished.
As it turned out, Donald
Sage, running in his former Stanford team’s jersey, was
the day’s spoiler as his third overall position and top
team scorer counted towards his current team’s score, The
Farm Team. Not far behind, the powerful XO duo of Paul Kezes and
Max King showed their consistency as they outraced some of America’s
top distance runners and made names for themselves. Hauling in
the eleventh and twelfth overall spots and numbers two and three
for team scoring purposes, Kezes and King seemed pleased with
the day’s performance.
“We all got stuck
in a big group coming into the first turn and the leaders got
away,” says Kezes afterwards. “I should have caught
[Luke] Watson, he was right there. But that’s it, I’m
ready, I can run with those guys tomorrow.” Kezes and King,
who moved up well in the second of the two-lap course, were never
out of view of the leaders.
Not far behind was
Brayce Forsha who has been showing some good speed on the track
with little speed work. “I passed a couple guys comin’
off the last turn,” said the miler, “I just tried
to stay with them ‘til the top of the hill, then I went.”
His efforts earned him the number five spot for team scoring purposes,
ahead of The Farm Team’s third runner.
Rounding out the four-man
team was James Longoria who was “dead at the top of the
last hill”, one of many casualties of the final ascent that
leaves only a short straightaway into the finish chute. “I
died just before the top of the hill and two guys went around
me, I just had nothing left.” To his credit, neither of
the two guys counted for team scoring purposes, he was well clear
of the next team runner.
Also in today’s
race, Jay Woodard continued the beginnings of a possible comeback.
“I had a choice to make, it was between racing today, or
taking a nap . . . I obviously made a poor decision!” joked
the 800-meter specialist. Woodard looks forward to the outdoor
season and getting back to the joys of outdoor track.
The XO women were represented
by lone runner, Liz Wilson, who despite being out of the cross
country racing scene for a while ran a great race to earn her
a 16th place finish in the field of 61 competitors. In a race
that was controlled by U.S. marathon studs Colleen de Reuck, 40,
and Jennifer Rhines, 30, Wilson, 36,was fourth among competitors
over 30.
“It was so bumpy
out there, the footing was really bad,” says Wilson afterwards,
“and it was pretty muddy on the back side of the course.”
Understandably so, as she was in the fifth race of the day.
“We’re
constantly trying to get more women out here representing XO,”
says Krempley of the state of the women’s team. “It’s
just been a really hard year for women’s distance. We’re
looking great on the track side of things, with plenty of talent
emerging from local colleges and universities interested in joining
us, but the distance team has been suffering all year. We hope
we can change that in ’05.”
The second day of competition
at Fort Vancouver will be the next opportunity for success. Eugene
resident Rick Fuller will join Kezes, King, and XO for the first
time this year in the team’s attempts at a 12k team title.
“I’m in the best shape of my life,” claimed
Fuller at a team gathering. Tim Julian will also be running again
and is in even better shape than he was at his impressive run
at Club Nationals last fall.
