Day Two
:: USATF Cross Country Championships
XO’s first World Championships Qualifier and Another Runner-Up
Team Finish!
Vancouver
, WA. —13 Febuary 2005—
He was all business as he rolled through the two-kilometer course
with the top distance runners in the nation and he was all smiles
as he crossed the finish line in the seventh position in Sunday’s
12k on the second day of competition in Fort Vancouver, Washington.
Paul Kezes is going
to the World Championships in Saint Galmier, France! Partially
because he ran a well-executed and extremely strong race, and
part because third-place finisher, Tim Broe, is opting not to
take part at the World Championships, giving up his spot to the
first alternate, who is seventh place finisher, Kezes.
“It’s about
time!” said a thrilled Kezes after receiving his medal with
the other top ten finishers. “I’ve been working my
butt off for years and now and it’s finally my time!”
Kezes ran with the lead pack that trailed eventual winner Dathan
Ritzenhein and Alan Webb (who dropped out midway through the race)
biding his time through the laps and letting the veterans pull
the group away from the rest of the field. Jorge Torres, Tim Broe,
Matthew Withrow, Jason Lemkuhle, Ian Dobson, and Kezes (in their
finishing orders: second through seventh) all ran together through
two and a half laps of the six lap race until Torres broke away
in an effort to run down Ritzenhein who was a heavy favorite going
into the race according to elite running news website, LetsRun.com.
Kezes stayed with the
group of elites through five laps before falling ten meters behind.
That, however, is all the ground he lost and he never relinquished
his hold on seventh place beating the eighth place finisher, Matt
Gabrielson of Reebok, by fourteen seconds.
Continuing to make
Team XO a tough team to beat was Max King (eleventh place) who
ran through the field until settling with the second main pack
some ten seconds behind the first. “I moved up the whole
way and I think the only guy that passed me was at the end,”
says a muddy and tired King after the awards ceremony in which
he was excluded by a heartbreaking one spot being out kicked by
Peter Gilmore by just three tenths of a second. “It’s
like getting kicked really hard, several times . . . you know
where,” he included, obviously frustrated. “To get
twelfth in the 4k and eleventh here? Please sir, can I have another?”
To his credit, King
was the third place among team finishers; he was fourth at Club
Nationals. He also ran down double World Championships qualifier
of 2002, Dave Davis of the Nike Oregon Project, no small feat.
This weekend caps a tremendous cross-country season for Max King
(Regionals winner, tenth at Clubs, twelfth in the 4k, and eleventh
in the 12k). Team XO looks forward to his progress as he emerges
as one of the nations premier cross-country runners.
Making his season debut,
Rick Fuller, thirtieth place finisher and third XO runner had
this to say of the race, “It stung.” It tends to,
especially when you pass at least twenty other runners during
the race. Fuller started out at his usual conservative pace and
picked his way through the pack with the confidence of a seasoned
veteran. He ran a great tactical race that took him past several
Hansons-Brooks runners and solidified XO’s eventual second-place
team finish.
“I only got one
gear right now,” said a tired Fuller post-race, “I
guess I’m not quite as fit as I thought, but it was tough
out there, it definitely stung.” We look forward to seeing
more of Rick Fuller as he turns the corner into the Master’s
scene when he turns forty this year.
Tim Julian rounded
out a solid top four for XO and sealed the deal on a runner-up
finish to The Farm Team. “I’m sorry I didn’t
run faster,” Julian says to Team XO Director Ross Krempley
who laughed it off.
“Tim ran a great
race, everyone ran a great race, we were probably the smartest
team out there,” said a content Krempley as the flags were
being rolled up and the tents brought down. “Nobody freaked
out, everybody ran smart and confident, moving up through the
packs throughout. The Farm Team was solid today, and their top
two were just as effective as ours. They brought their third and
fourth in ahead of ours, and that’s where you win races.”
What Julian, 34, most
likely did not realize immediately after the race, was that he
was the fourth finisher among those 30 and over. Among those ahead
of him were Matt Thull, 30, Rick Fuller, 39, and Jonathan Clemens,
also 30. Today’s race was a showcase of young talent with
ten of the top fifteen runners and twenty of the top thirty all
age 25 or under.
Rounding out the second
place XO 12k squad was fourth place Portland Marathon finisher,
Destry Johnson. “It was more like a good workout today,”
said the ever-positive Johnson after finishing the muddy course
in sixty-ninth place, “It’s all leading up to the
Boston Marathon.” When asked if this gave him some mental
toughness moving forward towards Boston, he replied, “That
race will be easy compared to this one!” The mud and rolling
hills claimed many runners in this weekend’s exciting action.
Red ribbons attached
to official USA Track and Field Medallions were awarded to all
of Team XO’s men this weekend as both teams finished in
second place. “You want to take one home. You want to take
one from The Farm Team, or from Hansons-Brooks. You want to take
one from the teams fortunate enough to have the big budgets. You
want to make a big statement that says, ‘Hey, look at us,
we’re really doing something here!’ But really, how
much more could you ask?” remarked Krempley. “It’s
our second season as a cross country team, our first appearance
at both Fall and Winter Nationals, we take home two second place
finishes and send a guy to the World Championships. We’re
very pleased and look forward to the continued growth of this
team.”
Next Opportunity for
Success!
Some of Team XO will
travel up to Seattle for it’s final indoor meet at the Dempsey
Indoor Facility at the University of Washington on March 5th.
Paul Kezes’ race with Team USA at the World Cross Country
Championships remains the only race left in this year’s
cross-country campaign. Believe it or not, outdoor track and field
is right around the corner!
