Fuller Wins US Masters Cross Country Title
Van Cortlandt Park - New York City - N.Y. - February 18 2006 - A chilly opening day of the USATF National Cross Country Championships saw a frozen course that could have been a mud bog on a warmer day. The race officials smoothed the muddy course before it froze to create a fast level surface for the elite runners. The first day of meet, that acted as the World Cross Country Team Trials featured six races, one being the Master’s Men’s 8k Championship race, which was won by Team XO’s own Rick Fuller.
Fuller, now 40 years old and a new Masters runner, pulled away from one of the most talented groups of masters runners in years that included last year’s champion, Danny Martinez. Fuller found a rhythm early in the race and the pack gradually thinned out until just himself and Sean Wade of Houston, Texas. “I felt strong and have been training really well,” said Fuller, “so I just kept stepping on the gas a little more, but didn’t give everything I had, I wanted to save some for the 12k.”
“Rick is a special breed of masters runner,” smiled Team XO Director Ross Krempley, “and he fits well on XO because he’s still an elite level athlete in the open races. He looks like he’s 25 [years old] and he races like it too!” After winning the Masters 8k championship by 26 seconds, Rick returned the next day ready to run the Open Men’s 12k Championship with the rest of his Team XO teammates.
“I felt great in the 12k, going down hills stung a little bit,” commented Fuller in his native Southern accent, “but if I had to do it over again, I’d still do both.” He finished second for the team, good for seventh in the team standings in a time of 38:11.
“This is a great accomplishment for Rick and for the team,” continued Krempley. “Rick has been with the cross country team since the beginning, his wisdom and leadership have been instrumental in the development of this team. He’s been through it all too, from the Farm Team, to working under Coach Vigil, an elite training group in Michigan, all the way to Bill Dellinger’s group in Eugene. He’s definitely a veteran in the sport and we’re really happy to have him with us!”
Not only did Rick win the overall prize, he also won perhaps an equally coveted prize among Masters runners, the “Age Grade” prize. This award is given to the runner who performs the best relative to his age. In a close race, he was calculated to have performed one-half a percent better than the next best performer. Rick looks forward to running high profile road races throughout the country this year while attempting to break 29:00 in the 10k at some of the elite University of Oregon track meets this spring and summer.

XO Travels Across The Country to the World XC Trials
Van Cortlandt Park - New York City - N.Y. - February 17 2006 - XO will send a team of five to the U.S. National Cross Country Championships that will act as the trials for the World Cross Country Championships. Max King will lead the charge along with Dan McLean, Tim Julian, Dylan Mason, and Rick Fuller who will double in the masters 8k and the open men’s 12k on the following day. Fuller is aiming at his first U.S. Masters individual championship after turning that “magic number” 40 last year. King is seeking his first World Cross Country team berth in the open 12k. Last year King placed 11th in the 12k. “I am hoping to make the team, after coming off a PR in the Half marathon at the US championships last month and another PR up in Seattle two weeks ago in the mile and 3k, I feel like anything is possible,” said King.
The meet will take place at New York’s Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on February 18-19. XO team director Ross Krempley is optimistic about XO’s chances, “We know that this is mainly an individual event, and the team aspect is not as important, but we still wanted to bring a full team to support the team component of the meet. Members winning championships, making the world team, and having fun on the sloppy course in New York is what this trip is all about”.
