XO Represented at National Championships |

Boston, MA – February 25 2006 - Team XO athletes have traveled to the East coast for National Championship meets in their respective events. Max King claimed a spot on the USA Team that will travel to Fukuoka, Japan to the World Cross Country Championships with his third place finish.
On a cold clear day that claimed several under-prepared runners, King showed his strength on the famed hills of the Bronx’s Van Cordtland Park in New York City at the USA Track and Field National Cross Country Championships. “It will be my first international race outside of the U.S.,” beamed King, “I’m very excited.” King plans on running the NACAC Championships in which he finished third last year as the first American finisher.
In the Master’s competition, XO veteran Rick Fuller won the men’s championship race dominating the field with his 26 second win over the nearest competitor. “I felt strong and have been training really well,” said Fuller, “so I just kept stepping on the gas a little more.”
Elsewhere on the east coast, five XO athletes have traveled to Boston, Massachusetts for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Center. XO athletes attending were Leonidas Watson (Long Jump), Simidele Adeagbo (Triple Jump), Kyley Johnson (High Jump), Cari Soong (Weight Throw), and Niki McEwen (Pole Vault).
The championships started Friday with the final of the men’s and women’s weight throw. Soong, coming into the competition with a fourth place finish at last year’s edition was looking to improve on her ranking as well as her mark. Landing two solid throws, her second of 20.21m, Soong struggled her way through the remainder of the competition, due to back pain she suffered in a workout on Thursday, fouling all four of her remaining attempts. She ended with a sixth place finish in a tight field where the fourth place finisher was less than a foot and a half ahead. “I always step it up for the championships,” said Soong who threw a season best, “and I did, but then I fouled the remaining attempts. I hate to make any excuses, but it was a miracle that I even got the first two of my throws off with this back pain.”
On Saturday, Kyley Johnson got a chance to better his performance from last year’s indoor championships of 2.10 and a fifth place finish. “I started to feel really sick when I got to Boston,” said Johnson, “but I accomplished my goal of getting over seven feet and having some solid attempts at 7-2.5.” In what turned out to be a very deep field, Johnson’s 2.15 (7-0.5) earned him ninth place.
Three XO athletes competed on Sunday, the final day of competition: Simi Adeagbo, Leonidas Watson, and Niki McEwen. Simi started off, as the triple jump was the first event of the day. “It was a cap to a very consistent indoor season with every mark being close together,” said Simi who missed a medal by just six centimeters. Her jump of 13.36m earned her fourth place.
Leonidas Watson brought his skills to the long jump pit, but fell short of his typical marks landing a best of 24-10 (ninth place), roughly one foot short of his mark in Seattle earlier this season. Still, a solid indoor season under his belt, Watson looks forward to a successful outdoor season.
The final athlete for XO of the day was Niki McEwen in the women’s pole vault. In a highly competitive class of pole vaulters, McEwen held pace with the best in the field as she finished in a tie with three vaulters who had the same height (14-5). Tied with Mary Sauer and former Oregon star Becky Holliday, McEwen (5th) split the two beating out Holliday (6th) based on misses and behind Sauer (4th) based on attempts. “I’m very pleased with my performance and can’t wait for outdoors!” said McEwen who finished ahead of her seventh place, 14-1.25m vault at last year’s indoor nationals.
“These past two weekends have been incredible for the team,” said Team XO Director Ross Krempley. “Having a World qualifier, a U.S. Champion, and several high place finishers at the indoor championships is just a glimpse into what is in store for the outdoor season when our national power cross country team combines with our national power track team.”
